Corrosion Behaviour of Alkali Treated Highly Porous Ti-Nb-Cu Alloy

In this study, highly porous Ti-Nb-Cu alloy foams were produced by a powder metallurgy method for dental implant applications. Nb was used for beta-phase Ti stabiliser. Beta-Ti phase has low Young's modulus close to bone, higher wear resistance and biocompatibility. Cu addition reduced the sintering temperature of the alloy. In addition, Cu is antibacterial. Alkali treatment was used to activate surface for induce a bioactive layer to enhance bioaclivity. Alkali treatment was performed by soaking the foams in NaOH solution and then heating at 600 °C. After alkali treatment, foams were immersed into simulated body fluid to induce a bone-like apatite layer on surface. Corrosion behaviour of the specimens was examined. Mechanical properties of the specimens were studied.
