Impact Analysis of Public Facilities Configuration Standard to Residents' Non-Commuting Activities: A Case Study of Six Residential Parcels in Shanghai

This paper presents a comprehensive method to describe public facilities configuration of residential area. Six residential parcels in Shanghai, China, are selected as study objects. Based on information of public facilities location, which is collected through secondary development of Google Map API with JavaScript, a comprehensive score of facilities configuration can be calculated. Furthermore, residential parcels are classified into different types based on the comprehensive score, in the end specific improvement suggestions can be given to those residential parcels with poor scores. Analysis shows that residential parcels which are close to commercial complexes get better scores in accessibility. In areas equipped with reasonable facilities, percentages of residents who walk while doing non-commuting activities are higher, which leads to a reduction of non-commuting PKT (person kilometer traveled). However, on the contrast, residents in these parcels uses cars more often in commuting activities, produce a large number of VKT (vehicle kilometers traveled).
