Do Demographic Factors Have an Effect on Resident's Satisfaction of the Transportation System? A Case Study of Nansha District in Guangzhou

Residents' satisfaction of transportation, which relates to the perceived service quality of transport service system, is an important index to evaluate and measure the urban transport conditions. However, satisfaction of transportation, as an experience and feeling of a person, is determined not only by the level of service of transportation system, but also by the perception of residents, which has an important relationship with the demographic factors of residents, including gender, age, house location, occupation, income, etc. In order to explore the effects of demographic factors on satisfaction of transportation, face-to-face questionnaire surveys were conducted in Nansha District in Guangzhou. According to the survey data, firstly, the demographic factors affecting the satisfaction of transportation are identified using the analysis of variance (ANOVA). Secondly, the relationship between each demographic characteristic of residents and the satisfaction of transportation is studied. The results show that age, house location, occupation and income have a significant influence on satisfaction of transportation. Thirdly, an estimation model of transportation satisfaction is built. The study can help decision makers, traffic engineers and transportation planners to understand the perceptions and demands of the various groups of residents on transportation services, as well as transportation operation agencies and service companies to improve their services for different groups of residents.
