Early depth partitioning determination algorithm for SHVC encoding standard

SHVC standard is referred as the scalable extension of the high efficiency video coding HEVC standard. SHVC encoder adopts a quad-tree based structure allowing the use of block partitioning that fit better with the image characteristics. This technique may achieve a higher coding efficiency. However, it induces a significant computational complexity in the encoding process. In order to speed up the SHVC encoder an early depth partitioning determination algorithm is proposed in this paper. The proposed method is based on statistical observations and depends on the quantization parameter value as well as the frame type. The proposed method may achieve up to 17% time reduction for Enhancement layer processing (EL) with a tolerable loss in PSNR and a slight increase of the bit rate.
