In this paper, it is proposed to use a matrix converter for linear induction motor (LIM) drives. A matrix converter is a direct AC-AC converter. It has the potential to regenerate power and to connect directly across the AC power line, thus it is possible to improve the efficiency in the entire system of LIMs drive. In this experiments, the operating characteristics of the matrix converter were examined in the three states: acceleration, regeneration and direct connection when a LIM with a disc-shaped secondary side was driven. As a result, it is clear that the matrix converter is a suitable device for operating LIMs.
