Losses due to pulse width modulated (PWM) supplies may play an important role in the efficiency of some of the electrical machines used in renewable energy systems due to variable working conditions. In this work, experimental measurements on a test bench, and a special procedure for the separation of PWM magnetic losses, are used to study the effect of the two main PWM supply parameters (modulation index and modulation frequency) on the efficiency of a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM).
