Cost saving due to imbalances reduction in the Italian ancillary services market

Italy has seen witnessed a very massive penetration of photovoltaic and wind generation in the recent years and renewable Energy Sources (RES) are likely to continue the upward trend observed in the past decade, boosted by the European Union ambitious goal of achieving high share of renewable energy. Aim of the paper is to investigate, by means of MODIS, an Italian Ancillary Services Market tool developed by CESI, the cost reduction for the ancillary services system related to a more accurate forecast of the solar and wind production. Conclusions show that, even if RES imbalance has a low weight in the total national imbalance, reducing the error forecast related to the RES production prediction, has a good impact in term of cost reduction in the Italian ancillary market.
