Ambient air pollution, in the recent years, has become a matter of grave concern. Air pollution, as a result of suspended particulate matter and toxic gases like sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) etc., has affected 9 out of 10 people globally, with highest levels of exposure in the developing and least developed countries. Acute exposure to SO2can result in health effects that are life threatening. Motor vehicle exhaust has become one of the main sources of SO2of late. Enforcement of emission standards like Bharat Stage VI (BS- VI) can help reduce the levels of SO2in ambient air being released from automobiles. This work focuses on the detection and monitoring of the concentrations of SO2and CO from automobile exhaust by implementing Internet of Things (IoT). Three different sensors, DHT11, MQ-136 and MQ-7, that detect and measure temperature and humidity, SO2concentration and CO concentration respectively, have been integrated with a microcontroller to process the data and signals from the sensors. The processed data is sent to a ThingSpeak cloud server using a WiFi module. This data can be globally accessed through the Android application that was developed to display these concentrations real-time. An e-mail alertsystem.using If This Then That (IFTTT), which intimates the user when the SO2emissions from the automobiles exceed 10 parts per million, have also been developed as part of the work, which in turn helps to reduce the amount of SO2released from vehicles into the atmosphere.
