Zinc oxide surge arrester with gap has been widely used in transmission lines. There is no effective method to detect the performance degradation of the current, because of its normal operation without divulge current. This paper presents an experiment about the characteristics of lightning impulse aging and the surface temperature increment of the zinc oxide arrester (MOA) by test. According to this experiment, a method for monitoring the state of zinc oxide arrester with gap is proposed. In this method, the large current impact times and the surface temperature increment as the state quantity. And the on-line monitoring device for zinc oxide arrester with gap was developed correspondingly. The test results show the effectiveness of the method.
