This paper will present the development of an open-use simulation software. The software is intended to be used for studying the potential impacts of photovoltaic (PV) systems on distribution networks. The software is composed of an electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulator interfaced with the phasor simulator, OpenDSS. It is used to perform electromagnetic transient analysis and quasi-static time-series studies simultaneously. The EMT analysis is performed for grid-tied PV systems modeled in Matlab, while OpenDSS is used to model the distribution network. An interface protocol is implemented for the exchange of data between the two parts using a component object model (COM) server. The paper discusses the need for such a tool in the power systems simulation field. The paper also explores different features and advantages of the software and its applications. The software is tested using a real Florida-based reduced network. A full EMT model of the same network and PV system is used to validate the results. The results suggest that the hybrid software is faster than full EMT solution with a very high accuracy.
