Chemically Bonded Asphalt for Improved Adhesion Performance

Stripping is a significant problem in North America and other parts of the world. Damage occurs as weak bonds between the aggregate and the asphalt binder are disturbed due to the presence of water. This mechanism of degradation can lead to loss of structural capacity resulting in significant rutting and cracking of pavements. For many years the most proven technology has been considered as the use of hydrated lime as an anti-stripping additive. In addition, considerable use has also been made of other chemical additives such as amines. However both the agencies and many contractors have been looking for an alternate method for a variety of health and safety requirements. Problems exist with hydrated lime being a caustic material and amines can present odour problems in some circumstances. The data obtained from organosilane and other technologies enable comparative analysis of Tensile Strength Ratios (TSR) between control, lime, amines, and organosilane which was found to be significant. This paper reports that data along with a description of the experimentation and materials evaluated.
