What do you do when you have more downdrag than vertical support with a driven pile? Atlas Foundation Company faced this problem when looking at a project in the western part of North Dakota where the site had 15 feet of new fill overlying 55 feet of soft clay. "We were looking at driven pipe pile lengths of over 150 feet to support design loads of 25 tons", said Joel Zeltinger, P.E. the geotechnical engineer on the project. Atlas suggested using a steel pipe pile inside of a larger steel pipe pile shell. The outer pipe pile would act as a bond-breaker to protect the load-bearing pile from a portion of the downdrag and allow it to more efficiently transfer the load from the surface to the bearing soil at depth.
