Consequences of impact pile driving on damage to nearby infrastructure

Recent examples of vibration induced settlement damage to structures and pavements in Michigan in 2009 and Indiana in 2015 have highlighted the settlement hazard associated with high energy construction operations like impact pile driving. Direct damage to nearby facilities from high energy operations is unlikely except in the close-in region; within about 25 feet of the vibration source. However, damage due to settlement of infrastructure facilities at much greater distances is possible where loose, clean sands comprise the underground profile. Recent studies presented here have established a model for vibrations from impact pile driving and coupled that model with soil properties derived from SPT values to aid in evaluating the potential for damage from vibratory settlement (shakedown). Major portions of this paper are from two ASCE publications cited in the references as Woods et al (2014) and Gkrizi et al (2016).
