IP networks have become an integral aspect ofthe broadcast technical plant. Integration with the legacybroadcast infrastructure can range from minimal controlfunctions to a complete IP based content transport facility.Regardless on the integration level or complexity, the IPnetwork is yet another critical system for the broadcastengineer to understand and maintain. When abnormalitiesdo occur, how does the broadcast engineer isolate andresolve IP network issues in a timely manner? Too often,“shooting from the hip” troubleshooting approaches occurunder the pressure of quickly resolving the problem. Thispaper will present a structured approach to IP networktroubleshooting modeled after the industry standard “OSINetworking” model. The layer design of the OSI modelprovides the perfect framework in which to build astructured troubleshooting approach focused upon the DataFlow layer functionality to quickly isolate the root causeissue.
