More than three years have passed since theCALM Act went into effect, and television broadcasters, forthe most part, finally have a handle on loudness.Commercials are under control and loudness complaintsare minimal. Does that mean we're all done with thebusiness of managing television audio? As it turns out, theanswer is, "Not quite!". True to Newton's Third Law, "Forevery action, there is an equal and opposite reaction", wellintentioned but misguided efforts at managing loudnesshave taken their toll on broadcast audio. A large part ofwhat makes television audio exciting and compelling isdynamic range. Digital television transmission can deliverwide audio dynamic range and it is a requisite part of goodtelevision audio. If you thought that loudness and dynamicrange were synonymous, you are not alone. In thispresentation, we will explore the critical differencesbetween the two and show that TV audio can be bothcompliant with loudness requirements AND engaging.
