Interconversion of High Dynamic Range Video Formats

High Dynamic Range (HDR) television hascaptured the imagination of the broadcast and movieindustries. Combined with large, high resolution displays theeffect of HDR can be stunning. Multiple formats areemerging for HDR TV and some have already beenstandardised. There will be a need to convert between theseformats. There will also be a need to interconvert betweenstandard dynamic range and high dynamic range images.Furthermore algorithmic solutions for these conversions arehighly desirable for scenarios where manual re-grading isnot possible or to save the time and expense of manualre-working.This paper describes an automatic approach to HDRinterconversion that takes account of psychovisual aspects ofhuman vision. It also describes techniques to achieve suchconversions whilst retain the highest perceptual quality. Itwill describe the interconversion (both ways) between ST2084 (PQ) and Hybrid Log-Gamma signals. It addresses theissue of displaying images at different brightness, and indifferent viewing conditions, to the reference conditions inwhich they were graded (also known as display rendering ordisplay management). Results for recent experiments arereported to support this paper.
