Interconversion of High Dynamic Range Video Formats

High Dynamic Range (HDR) television has captured the imagination of the broadcast and movie industries. Combined with large, high resolution displays the effect of HDR can be stunning. Multiple formats are emerging for HDR TV and some have already been standardised. There will be a need to convert between these formats. There will also be a need to interconvert between standard dynamic range and high dynamic range images. Furthermore algorithmic solutions for these conversions are highly desirable for scenarios where manual re-grading is not possible or to save the time and expense of manual re-working. This paper describes an automatic approach to HDR interconversion that takes account of psychovisual aspects of human vision. It also describes techniques to achieve such conversions whilst retain the highest perceptual quality. It will describe the interconversion (both ways) between ST 2084 (PQ) and Hybrid Log-Gamma signals. It addresses the issue of displaying images at different brightness, and in different viewing conditions, to the reference conditions in which they were graded (also known as display rendering or display management). Results for recent experiments are reported to support this paper.
