The evolution from High Definition (HD) toUltra HD (UHD) at 4K and 8K are moving rapidly and theamount of video data is increasing exponentially, which willbe hardly handled with conventional IT technologies usedfor HD. However, IT technologies have variations in orderto meet various workload demands. The IBM TokyoLaboratory with the IBM Storage Systems team inGaithersburg, Maryland conducted a public demonstrationof the 4K and 8K workflow collaborating with businesspartners classifying technology requirements in the 4K and8K file-based video processing and mapped IT technologiesto them, where two leading storage technologies areessential: IBM Enterprise Tape and IBM FlashSystem ascomplementary, of which combination is called FLAPE(FLash and TaPE). FLAPE has the outstanding duality thatgives a cost-effective big data storage and a super highperformance data processing capability in the 4K and 8Kworkflow. Through the demonstration activity, it wasrealized that a cloud-based Media Asset Managementstrengthens FLAPE, minimizing the requirement for a highbandwidthnetwork. As a result, FLAPE accelerates the 4Kand 8K evolution.
