Over the past 30 years, the use of waterborne coatings has increased, driven by the desire to reduce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) because of their impact on human health and the environment. At the same time, properly designed low VOC waterborne systems still need to maintain all the performance strengths of commercial high VOC solventborne coatings. Epoxy-novolac resin-based coatings have been used for many years on heavy duty marine and protective coatings applications due to their good thermal and chemical resistant properties. They are particularly suited for services that require resistance to hydrocarbons, water immersion, caustics, and acids. Due to their high viscosity, high solvent levels are needed to improve processing and application. Olin Epoxy has designed a new, zero VOC waterborne epoxy novolac dispersion. The high functionality of this novolac dispersion provides films with inherently higher crosslink density, which yields high performance coatings with superior chemical resistance properties. In addition, the solvent-free nature allows the formulator complete latitude in meeting the strictest VOC regulations.
