Providing thermal protection for spacecraft landing on Venus is complicated by changes in the thermal conductivity of porous insulators at high pressures. Based on experimental results, multiple explanations for this phenomena have been provided, including interfacial temperature jumps. The current work, where simulations in a 2-D cavity are qualitatively compared with recent experimental work, suggest that these changes may be more realistically compared with pressure-dependent properties of the gas.
