Ti_2AlN is one of the interesting ternary and quaternary materials called MAX-phases which can be found in the Ti-Al-C-N system. These carbides and nitrides have heterodesmic layer structure consisting of covalent and metallic chemical bonds which results in specific set of properties which locates them on the boundary between metals and ceramics. Thanks to this they may find wide range of application as a construction or functional materials. The Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis with local ignition system has been applied for obtaining sinterable powders of Ti_2AlN materials. The nitrogen pressure may play an important role during the SHS synthesis of this material. Seven different chemical reactions are tested and various nitrogen pressures, from 0.5 atm. to 10 atm., are applied in order to obtain powders containing high amount of MAX phase ternary material. The XRD method is used to establish phase composition of the final product of the synthesis.
