The paper presents a novel innovation in research work regarding transfer of voice message as Short Message Service (SMS) payload. Audio to SMS method supports the transfer of voice message even in low strength signal areas, where voice call break downs but there exists enough signal strength to deliver SMS asynchronously. Basically audio stream is converted to ASCII character stream, compressed, and delivered as connected SMS payload. In normal human speech there are several pauses in each delivered sentence. Based on this hypothesis, we identified and removed silence zones from voice stream before its conversion to ASCII characters. For generating the original voice message at the receiver's end, the silence zones information is delivered as separate SMS payload. Our technique achieved approximately a 20% reduction in overall SMS payload. We used Thuraya SG-2520 satellite phone simulator in J2ME environment for our experiments.
