Carrier Ethernet extends the original set of Ethernetlocal area networking technology for supporting enhanced servicesfor data center networks. Since congestion managementis an important feature for data center networks to managethe increased demand on data traffic, the IEEE 802.1Qauwork group has developed the Quantized Congestion Notification(QCN) scheme. This scheme aims to manage congestion and isimplemented at Layer 2 for the Carrier Ethernet. The QCNscheme uses a backward congestion notification to avoid longdelays and minimize loss in a Carrier Ethernet network. In thispaper, we present the results of detailed simulations achieved toassess the QCN scheme performance. Both a single congested linkand a more complex configuration are analyzed in this study. Thispaper evaluates the feedback rate, the loss rate, the stability, thefairness, and the scalability performance of the standard QCNfor a unicast traffic transmission.
