Some offshore wind turbines might be constructed in seismically activeregions, the impact of earthquake loading on design and operation ofoffshore wind turbines has to be taken into consideration. Site-specificenvironmental conditions such as earthquake and soil are crucial for theperformance and structural integrity of offshore wind turbines. Thiswork is to present dynamic load analyses for the NREL 5MW referenceoffshore wind turbine with monopile support structure subjected toearthquake loadings. The horizontal earthquake loadings are applied tothe reference offshore wind turbine at different operation conditions.The FAST code is chosen as the analysis tool and is further recompiledto study the earthquake and soil effects. The computed results showthe importance of flexibility of support structure bottom on theoptimization of offshore wind turbine and support structure design.The dynamic load analyses performed in this study will provide theinsights into the local offshore wind turbine and support structuredesign.
