Conventional ship-borne navigation and coast surveillance radar systems operating either. in S- or in X-band exhibit two major deficiencies provoking high operational costs and additionally, limiting their performance. On the one hand, they employ single incoherent RF pulses with high peak power generated typically by magnetrons. On the other hand, the systems' antennas are mechanically rotated. Both, the magnetron and the antenna are components that require frequent maintenance. The incoherent-signal processing and the rigid rotation of the antenna make target detection and tracking very difficult detection and tracking very difficult.
