This paper presents a simple control approach for photovoltaic energy fed water pumping system based on a synchronous reluctance motor (SyRM) drive. A boost converter is employed between the solar photovoltaic (SPV) array and a three phase voltage source inverter. The objective is to extract maximum power from SPV array and to control the SyRM efficiently. The boost converter is utilized for the optimization of SPV array power through an incremental conductance based maximum power point tracking algorithm, under changing weather conditions. A SyRM is used here because of its rugged structure, minimum winding loss and low cost. In this proposed system, a maximum power factor control based indirect field orientation control is used for controlling the motor. The proposed system is designed, modeled and simulated with the help of MATLAB/Simulink models and its performance is investigated for dynamic atmospheric conditions which confirm the validity of the proposed system.
