Correlation of photon lifetime and maximum bit rate for 55 Gbit/s energy-efficient 980 nm VCSELs

Systematic variations of the photon lifetime in concert with variations of the oxide-aperture diameter lead to a record increase of the bit rate up to 55 Gbit/s at room temperature for our energy-efficient 980 nm vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers.
