In recent years, instances of accidents, especially on road accidents have been very common, with reports indicating the count to be as high as 17 deaths per hour on an average (in India). Several of such accidents cause deaths because the duration between the occurrence of an accident and notifying the concerned authority is considerably larger than what should be immediate. According to studies performed on a data set from Missouri, US, it is stated that the police delayed 5 mins or more to initiate the rescue operation in 10 to 20% of fatal accidents. Delays of this nature generally occur because, an accident witness in spite of being at the spot might not be prompt enough to provide intimation of injuries to the authorities and also due to the complications that the process involves, with different bodies having to get involved into cases of road accidents like Police, Hospital, Ambulance providers etc. In such cases, the life of a person which potentially could have been saved is lost due to the delay in reporting the accident.
