3D Paving Experience at the National Corvette Museum

The best asphalt mixes will not perform as anticipated if poor construction practices are employed. This report covers some of the planning considerations when paving a high-speed motorsports track. A hot longitudinal joint was specified by the Owner to achieve high joint densities and a precise joint match. Prior to paving, there was a significant amount of planning and training. Two wide paving kits were ordered for the paver setup, paving speeds were calculated to ensure the two pavers operating in echelon would maintain constant speed and spacing and consume the asphalt mix without stopping. Seventeen universal total stations were setup and 3D grade control was installed on the pavers. The quality control team planned the compaction process, which included managing compaction through a tender zone in the mix. Four main areas of planning were utilized during the construction of the asphalt base course to make this project an all-around success in terms of quality and performance. These included ⅰ) a discussion of planning the echelon paving, ⅱ) the setup of wide-width paving kits, ⅲ) the use of 3D grade control on the pavers, and ⅳ) planning of the rolling patterns used by the four double-drum asphalt rollers.
