The Transient Drawdown Analysis (TDA) is anew methodology based on the principle ofspherical flow applied to cuttings. The sphericalflow of hydrocarbons is measured from cuttingsplaced into a specific solvent. A UV light similarto that of a fluoroscope is used to measure the flowof hydrocarbons out of the cuttings within thesolvent. A series of multi-stage flow charts aregenerated from the measurements obtained, whichare comparable to multi-flow permeabilitymeasurements of mercury injection.The multi-stage nature of the flow measured iscalibrated to characterize a new concept of“recharge permeability” (k_1, k_2, k_3) in milli-darcies(mD). The sequence of flow from the pressuredrops indicate the contribution of the first, secondand third order porosities within the matrix of thesample, and is quantified as the cumulated flow(Q_1, Q_2, Q_3) in millivolts. The rate of TransientDrawdown flow is measured from the slope (m_1,m_2, m_3) of the measurements. From the TDAmeasurements a comprehensive multi flowporosity model is generated for the use of reservoirstimulation.Both lab and field tests have been conducted usingthis methodology over the past three years. Resultshave been comparable to those obtained from logsand permeability measured from cores incommercial labs. The amount of time it takes togenerate the charts varies from 500 – 1,000 sec. inconventional porosity types and 5,000 sec. inunconventional shale oil and shale gas types. Thismethodology enables measurements to be takenduring drilling from the cuttings obtained beforelogging without the need of having to drill cores.
