The Combination of UHD, MPEG-DASH, HEVC and HTML5 for New User Experiences

The industry has progressed since when the nextgreat hope for video was that of DVD. In 1993 the idea of aDVD resolution of 720 x 480 was a hugely appealingprospect. Now, more than 20 years later, we are offering TVwith a resolution of 3840 x 2160 and the ability to watchhigh quality content across multiple devices, wherever weare in the world. However, the capacity of the core and edgenetworks are coming under increasing strain due to theincreasing level of personalized (unicast) consumption whilewe are simultaneously demanding ever-increasing picturequality. This paper discusses how the combination of UHD,MPEG-DASH with HEVC (H.265) and HTML5 technologyis driving a ‘perfect storm’ in our industry, which will helpto transform the future TV landscape and bring about awhole new generation of TV and video experiences.
