The “network” has become a criticalcomponent of today’s broadcast plant as content transportand control functions are universally implemented in thenetwork environment. The industry standard network oftoday is based upon an IP based Ethernet networkinfrastructure. The Ethernet switch is the building block ofthe network topology. Network performance and security areoften “best practices” design considerations that guide theinfrastructure architecture and equipment selection. The useof a switched infrastructure with a single host per switchport insures contention free full-duplex operation between ahost and the network switch for performance enhancement. This approach also allows switch port security features to beutilized which help insure that the network is available todesignated host devices. This paper will provide an overviewof basic Ethernet switch operation and the use of portsecurity features within an industry standard “Managed”Ethernet switch to insure network performance and security.
