The “network” has become a critical component of today’s broadcast plant as content transport and control functions are universally implemented in the network environment. The industry standard network of today is based upon an IP based Ethernet network infrastructure. The Ethernet switch is the building block of the network topology. Network performance and security are often “best practices” design considerations that guide the infrastructure architecture and equipment selection. The use of a switched infrastructure with a single host per switch port insures contention free full-duplex operation between a host and the network switch for performance enhancement. This approach also allows switch port security features to be utilized which help insure that the network is available to designated host devices. This paper will provide an overview of basic Ethernet switch operation and the use of port security features within an industry standard “Managed” Ethernet switch to insure network performance and security.
