CARBON FOOTPRINT CALCULATION FOR RESIDENTIAL CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS: COMPARISON OF EMBODIED CARBON IN FOUR STRUCTURAL SYSTEM TYPOLOGIES
The research prepared for this abstract, examining embodied carbon and green house gasses equalized for carbon dioxide emissions (CO2-eq) in construction materials for residential construction systems, has been an ongoing research project engaging students during the development of the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) Solar Decathlon project. This project has been framed as a carbon neutral project, in both operations and construction. The research team investigated methodologies for evaluating construction materials, reviewing sources for understanding embodied energy and CO2-eq emissions. The research team have become familiar with the differences between operational CO2-eq emissions, and those embodied in the harvest, refinement, manufacture, and fabrication of construction materials. The objective of the research has been to develop a tool for deployment in architectural design studios at UWM and through the Society of Building Science Educators network of faculty across the country.
