Isotopic labeling was used to examine the formation and decomposition of hexamethylene triperoxide diamine (HMTD). 13-C labeled formaldehyde was found to incorporate into HMTD but also into the starting material, hexamine. Furthermore, added formaldehyde accelerated the formation of HMTD and improved its yield. In contrast, 15N ammonium was not incorporated into HMTD during synthesis, though it was found in the hexamine formed during the decomposition of HMTD under high humidity conditions. No hexamine formed during the decomposition of dry HMTD. Water was found to have a profound accelerating effect on the decomposition of HMTD.
