Rapid deck demolition & construction of the Patroon Island Bridge project is currently in progressand is using the “Best Value” concept by New York State Department of Transportation. The contract dollar valueis $145 million and was awarded to the joint venture of Halmar - A.Servidone/B.Anthony. This project is also partof the NY Work’s Accelerated Bridge Construction program, as well as the Driver’s First initiative. The maincomponent of the reconstruction of the Patroon Island Bridge is the deck replacement of the main river bridgeand interchange. This operation involved the removal of the existing deck and the installation of precast concretedeck panels with integral barriers. Construction procedures were designed for rapid deck replacement andstaged incrementally span by span during successive night or weekend closures to minimize impact on traffic. Atthe end of each work shift, the bridge was required to be open for traffic by providing temporary deck plates overopen joints between the existing and new decks, and grouting joints between adjacent new deck panels usingHigh-Early-Strength (HES) grout. Several means & methods were explored and implemented in order to get thework done most efficiently with placements of various crane types and configurations, during the various stagesof construction. In order to accommodate the staged construction, a moveable barrier system was required to beused for traffic on the I-90 corridor.
