Differences in load, shear stress and lateral forces between heavy and light rail bridges have been calculated andthe answers can save millions of dollars in construction costs. Bridgefarmer & Associates, Inc. researched anddemonstrated that prefabricated, pre-stressed concrete panels (PCP), commonly used for vehicular bridges butnot suitable for heavy rail bridges, are suitable for light rail transit (LRT) bridges. This paper tracks the researchand comparisons that saved the Dallas Area Rapid Transit (DART) millions of dollars in the construction of theirOrange Line Expansion.
