The performance of offshore wind speed estimation methods that usethe mesoscale model WRF (Weather Research and Forecasting model)are compared and evaluated using in-situ measurements from two sitesover the coastal waters off Shirahama, Japan. Results show that theone-year sequential simulation using the Japan MeteorologicalAgency’s Meso-Analysis as boundary conditions provide betterestimations than hybrid methods that use steady-state WRF simulationsfor 16 wind directions with in-situ wind speed measurements from aneighboring reference site. Results also indicate that the measurementsimulationhybrid methods can perform better than the one-yearsequential simulation method within 10 km of the reference site.
