摘要

In this paper, we develop an analytical framework to study the impact of HSR network configuration on capacity investments, ridership, profitability and social welfare. We focus on two alternative models for HSR development: (ⅰ) isolated corridors and (ⅱ) grid network structure. The former model has been adopted by Japan for the Tokaido line from Tokyo to Osaka. Conversely, China has been developing, almost at once, a grid of four east-west and four north-south HSR lines connecting many large cities. The analysis developed in this paper aims at providing potential guidance to shape future investments in HSR infrastructure by identifying and studying the relevant factors for the success of alternative HSR topologies.
