Evaluation of the economic value of operating quieter aircraft

The environmental issues linked to noise perceived by communities around airports are continuously increasing as air traffic is growing. As a consequence more and more airports implement specific noise regulations and operational restrictions. Today strong mitigation efforts are made by the aviation industry by developing efficient aircraft noise reduction technologies and operating noise abatement capabilities. Their implementation implies trade-offs with many other parameters as the noise performance must be integrated into the overall aircraft performance optimum. Our study investigates the mechanisms by which a perceived acoustic benefit creates value for air transport operators. A generic model was developed to quantify the benefit for airlines to operate quieter aircraft or operate aircraft more quietly. As a first step a focus is set on airports monitoring their traffic growth through the evolution of a global noise indicator against a limited noise budget.
