Three expressways including Lu-tong, Jie-fu-beng and Wu-xuan in Anhui province were analyzed regarding their maintenance cost-effectiveness based on a life cycle cost analysis (LCCA). By means of summarizing maintenance history, the annual maintenance strategies and frequency of service were obtained. Then the life cycle of each expressway was calculated according to the cumulative ESALs and design ESALs. Subsequently, three cases of maintenance planning for Lu-tong were strategized in accordance with the maintenance strategies of both Jie-fu-beng and Wu-xuan. Finally, the present value and annual present value for each expressway were determined. The results show that (1) annual total maintenance quantities are fluctuating with service time. Maintenance methods offering less robust treatments occupy the majority of the maintenance history. (2) Wu-xuan has the lowest maintenance cost-effectiveness and Lu-tong has the highest maintenance cost-effectiveness. (3) Both life cycle span and maintenance planning have significant impacts on cost-effectiveness analysis. The expressway with light traffic level probably has high cost-effectiveness in maintenance.
