Under the circumstances of worsening urban traffic congestion, the use of green waves in signal control plans is playing an increasingly important role in the management of urban traffic. However, there are several shortcomings in choosing the direction in which to establish a green wave, along a given corridor, via methods currently used by traffic management departments. These deficiencies include having only a single method and arbitrariness of the method, among others. In this paper, experiences in Changshu City surrounding the establishment of green waves are used as a case study. Ultimately, the case study helps establish principles and methods that may be used in the selection of the direction in which to establish a green wave along a roadway based upon three aspects: the land use and urban layout, the local road network layout, and the establishment of successive green waves.
