Cerro da Mina reservoir for industrial water: aspects of the design and construction

The Cerro da Mina reservoir was built to store the industrial water used in the ore production. The reservoir comprises, on the west and north sides, a rockfill embankment and, on the east and south sides, excavated rock slopes. The rockfill embankment maximum height is 30 m and has a volume of about 452 000 m~3. The excavated rock slopes have a maximum height of 21 m. All the reservoir area is waterproofed by a double lining system. The storage capacity is 1 450 000 m~3. The reservoir is equipped with a syphon auxiliary discharge, a spillway and an intersection channel to divert the pluvial water. This paper presents the main aspects of the reservoir final design, focusing on the rockfill embankment zoning and on the geomechanical characterization of the construction materials. The quality control of the embankment and the analysis of the settlements measured during construction are also presented.
