Frost heaving is an important reason for structural damage in cold regions. In this paper, a brief theoretical treatment of frost heaving is presented, applying the segregation potential theory and its use to interpret the site behaviour results and laboratory frost heave tests on undisturbed, natural samples. As an example, observations and laboratory testing are illustrated for one site. According to the gained and interpreted data, the conformity of the frost heave coefficient SP could be shown. This study illustrated, how frost-heave parameters can be estimated using available data on soils, determined in the laboratory on natural specimens, or back-calculated from site observations.
