An overview of the emerging area of sustainability in geotechnical engineering is presented. A philosophical perspective of sustainability is provided with an attempt to connect the broader scope of sustainable development to geotechnical engineering. A review of the research and case studies performed in geotechnical engineering and how they can impact sustainable development is presented. Subsequently, the different sustainability assessment frameworks available in geotechnical engineering are reviewed.
