This paper presents a new architecture for Flight Management Systems that is designed to improve flight management functionality and efficiency. The new architecture's foundation is splitting up the Flight Management System into a certified and an operationally approved domain and reallocating functionality to them. The domains are connected and together form a new entity for the Flight Management System. Shifting functionality to the operationally approved domain is considered to enable the usage of higher computational power, increased connectivity and therefore more sophisticated trajectory optimization algorithms. The paper presents assessments that were conducted to determine which functionality can be shifted without endangering safe flight operations as well as considerations made towards security of the new system. An evaluation concept and methods are presented with which the proposed architecture will be evaluated in the near future.
