The aviation industry is expected to undergo continual growth over the next few decades and several future demand forecasts predict that general aviation (GA) operations will be revitalized over this time span. It is widely acknowledged that the increase of air traffic will cause environmental problems with noise being one of the most significant problems that affects the human society. Several noise reduction technologies have been developed to mitigate the noise problems that arise from air traffic operations. The air traffic noise problem has to be evaluated in community-level and the noise assessment near Van Nuys airport was conducted in this study. Current and future noise reduction technologies for conventional aircraft fleet and future electric propulsion aircraft are surveyed. The noise reduction effects of these technologies on the airport community were evaluated using the Integrated Noise Model (INM) under different GA operation forecast scenarios as well as different technology insertion scenarios.
