The paper presents a comparative study of damping control function of coordinated designed multiple damping controllers which are added to two different types of the UPFC - phase angle controlled and vector controlled UPFC. Firstly in the paper, an introduction is presented to illustrate the structure and operational principle of phase angle controlled and vector controlled UPFC. Secondly, two main control functions of the UPFC are chosen to be added with damping controllers to achieve the most efficient design of the damping controllers. Thirdly, a method combining the sequential design and the simultaneous tuning is proposed for the coordinated design of two damping controllers. Finally, a case study is conducted on an example power system for the purpose of comparing the damping function performance of the phase angle controlled and vector controlled UPFC. Nonlinear simulation results are presented to demonstrate the comparison of the effectiveness of damping control capability of damping controllers attached to the phase angle controlled UPFC and vector controlled UPFC.
