A comparative study on DSM services employing distributed energy resources: Energy storage and direct load control

Nowadays, in the age of wide implementation of renewable energy sources, there is a real need for cost-effective ancillary services provided by distributed energy resources (DER). This paper introduces the results of comparative analysis of two alternative solutions capable for grid supporting in energy management as well as in voltage and frequency control. The properties of distributed energy storage (DES) and decentralized active demand response system (DADR) have been analyzed and compared in case of demand side management (DSM) in selected local balancing area (LBA). The technical and economic factors of DSM services have been defined and compared for both solutions taking into account different implementation and investment strategies.
