Also students can contribute to decreasing the environmental impact of personal traffic. This paper presents the design of an electrical motor for the student project Vehicle Design Summit, which aims to develop a novel plug-in hybrid vehicle with a 95% reduction in life cycle costs. A switched reluctance motor has been selected because of low production cost and low thermal rotor load. Choosing an optimum between low construction and controlling complexity on the one hand and limited torque ripple on the other hand resulted in the choice for an 8/6 switched reluctance motor. The design followed analytical calculations to determine the main dimensions of the stator and rotor. This initial design has been verified with the finite element method (FEM). FEM-simulations allowed optimizing the motor geometry for highest torque output.
